I looked into this further. I think you were correct. My 1986 5.0 w/v-belt is the same as the'88 Crown Vic w/serpentine.
On the'86, E3AE left. E5AE right, on the Crown Vic
I think these two are interchangeable.
Those are, except for the fuel pump boss. The 97 Windsor cover is different, the coolant ports are reversed as opposed to these two here. The Vic isn't really a serpentine setup, it's a standard rotation with two flat belts, the driver's side drives the alternator, waterpump and powersteering. The passenger side drives the A/C and smog pump
Yea, that's it. The top middle is the 94-95 Stang and 96-2001 Explorer/Mountaineer cover. If I'm not mistaken that was also used on the last year's T-Bird/Cougar too
Another question that goes well with this thread's title: Will my 1986 timing cover (E3AE, shown in the photo above and appears to be the same as the cover in the link) interchange seamlessly with a 1996 Explorer block? Generally, I would be simply replacing the 1986 short block with the '96. Adding E7TE ported heads and a Crane 364211 camshaft.

The blocks are no different in that regard. Be sure to use the locating dowels that center the cover. These are surrounding the bottom two cover bolts. The older, pre 80's covers lacked the dowels and you had to center the cover using the harmonic balancer or a tool made for this
The cover on the left has a fuel pump boss doesn't it? That wouldn't make it incompatible in this case but the hole has to be covered obviously.
Some of these had the opening cast over on the inside and don't need a cover plate on the opening. The one I used on my 331 was like this. I used a chrome cover outside just to dress it up.
