Question Drum to Disc ? 1989 E150

I have been thinking of replacing my rear brakes since i had some trouble stopping going down a big long hill about a year ago. the brakes dont feel that strong and a little sponge like. i cant tell if thats just in my head or not. i took it to a local tire shop and they looked it over and said they thought the rear drum brake looked fine.

Any suggestions on a good drum to disc rear conversion kit? is it worth it? would i need to replace the master cylinder and the brake lines too?

I just got a 1989 e-150 myself and it stops better than the 2003 GMC Safari I had before it and that had disc brakes all around. I wonder what condition your front disc brakes are in since they're doing more of the stopping than the rear. I would make sure they're working as they should and that the system has the proper amount of fresh brake fluid free of air/bubbles before I'd put money into converting the original system. That said, I'd also be curious to hear from anyone who's done the conversion and how much it cost.

I can't speak from experience but I'm sure you're looking at a possible master cylinder and booster change, brake lines too mostly to accommodate any proportioning valve that might have to be part of this swap.

I would say making sure the existing drum brakes are in top condition; high quality shoes, hardware and cylinders are operating perfectly. I'm guessing that year E-Series has front disc's? My own 2000 E250 has front discs and rear drums---no problem stopping safely even with loads approaching 1,000# on board.

You can also post this question in the brakes sub-forums here--perhaps some of the F-Series guys have done this and could pass along their experience. Either way good luck with this project!
