Im having the centers cut out of my original wheels and welded into new shells. Truck is all stock.
Wheels are 17x6.5, I have two options for backspacing: 3 3/4 or 5 3/4. Im not sure I understand enough about it to choose. Any help would be appreciated.
That won’t be in any manual. Original F-3 wheels (Budd 49380) are 17” x 5.5” wide and have 9/16” (.56”) of positive offset. That calculates to 3 13/16” of backspace, or slightly more than your 3 3/4” option. But your 6.5” rim adds an inch to the calculation. To keep the same stock balance front to back in the wider rim you’d need about 4 1/3” of backspace. No way the 5 3/4” is right. Stu
On my widow-maker conversion I used a 4.00 back spacing. Anything more, and the inside rear surface of your left-front tire will rub on the suspension when you turn full left.
My truck is a 1951 M3. Original wheels were 17 x 6.5. New wheels are 17 x 7.0.
I would NOT use the 5-3/4 backspace option.
On my truck, I had them convert one wheel, and then used it for a fit check on the front suspension & rear brake drums (14-inchers) on my truck to make sure there were no issues. Then I had the other three converted.
Original wheels were 17 x 6.5. New wheels are 17 x 7.0.
Is that a typo, or were you measuring outside of lip to outside of lip? The wheels are measured inside across the inner base which yields 5.5”. Regarding your 7” new rims, that is the size we normally see used on these custom builds. I didn’t know a 6.5” rim was now available. Stu
