I'll start by saying I am not an experienced mechanic, just a home tinkerer. I have a 1997 and recently the starter would not disengage from the flywheel and burned up before I could get the cables off. The starter is a Nippondenso, the big gear reduction starter. When I took the starter off I found it was loose so I assumed it was bound in the flywheel and could not release. But the new starter did the same thing.
Where should I turn next? Could it be the solenoid under the hood or the relay that is associated with the key, or even the key? I don't really know where to look next, but I assume I could just replace them all to be safe. So, I am just wondering if someone here has experienced the same problem.
Thanks, Just trying to learn something and couldn't find it in a search.
I would start by replacing the fender mounted relay, as it sounds like the contacts in the relay are sticking. Does the key return to the run position when released from trying to start?

I think my key returning to run has always been sluggish, so it's my habit to make sure it goes to run - I never just release it. I actually left the hardware store and was driving when I noticed the sound and immediately knew what it was. I turned the key to off and the starter did not stop turning. I am away from home right now, but I will get a relay and replace it this weekend. Glad Advance has a lifetime warranty, because I doubt the starter survived that.
Thanks. This day and time I have to try to fix things because I can't afford to take it somewhere.
