My starter went out in my truck on Friday night. I'm installing a new one, but I've got a quick question. On the starter there are two bolts. One of them has nothing on it, and the other has a metal strap that goes back into the starter. I didn't pay attention when removing the old starter, so now I've gotta figure out which bolt the battery connection goes to. I put it on the one with nothing on it, because I was sure that was the one, but the starter will not disengage.
The truck starts just fine, but the starter doesn't disengage off the flywheel so it whines, and I gotta hurry up and shut it off. Has anybody had this problem? I've replaced the fenderwell relay and also took back the starter and got a different one- same problem.
There is just a spring in the starter to force the teeth back and make it disengage. It sounds like it is not aligned properly. Was there a shim that may have fallen out? If it is not aligned properly when it is put in, the teeth will drag on the flywheel. You may also want to look at the bell housing bolts to make sure they are tight.
If these don't pan out, check the large cable to the starter. Disconnect it and use a tester to see if it has power with the key in the run position. If so, then you have a different problem. Let us know what you find.
Just to clarify, when the engine starts does it sound as if the starter is still being powered electrically? Or does it sound like the starter has shut down but the starter pinion gear is stuck in the flywheel gear? If you are not sure try pulling the coil lead so the truck can`t fire and turn the key to start. If the starter still runs after key is released then you probably have a faulty ign./start switch. This is on top of the steering column under the dash.
