First time trying to change my fuel filters. Ford wanted $250, so I decided to save some money and do it myself. What a nightmare it’s been lol I can’t get the water/fuel separator to stop draining. Is there a shut off switch somewhere on the 2017s? I’ve filled up like half a bucket. Nowhere online can I find it. Does anybody know if there is one and where it’s located?
I’ve also broke the hose out of the fuel filter fitting for the one up front. Seems to be a common issue. Off to ford tomorrow I guess to see if they have the part. 🤦♂️ Like I said, nightmare day
On the 17s, and only the 17s, the frame mounted fuel filter has been known to not stop draining. The solution seems to be to lift the front end up about 6” higher or park on an incline. They corrected this problem in the 18+ trucks.
As for the clip on the engine mounted filter breaking...... very common. If you are out of warranty, you can go with an H&S fuel filter setup that is billet and bullet proof. I haven’t gone that route because I am under warranty so I just carry a spare clip and filter in the truck.
The factory engine mounted filters have also been known to spring pin hole leaks. That explains why I keep and extra filter in the truck.
OP, you’re not the only one that had a nightmare day doing the filter changes.
Thanks gents. I ended up ordering a part off line. Ford parts only had the clip with the whole fuel injector line attached to it.
So they would have had to pull the block for me to replace it. Ended up overnighting a part from here:
Hopefully this gets that part fixed. As for the frame mounted filter, the owners manual states there’s a shut off valve above the fuel tank. Gonna take a look at it tomorrow.
Shut off valve? Hmm, I’ve seen a lot threads about the separator draining for ever and not once did someone mention a shut off valve. Please let me know if you find one so I can let the other threads know. I have an 18 and haven’t looked at the 17s manual. 👍

The disconnect or valve has been mentioned a few times. It sounds like it is difficult to access. Other recommendations are to have as little fuel in the tank as possible.
The newer fuel filter kits are coming with a replacement clip for the upper filter.

I saw the new clips for the upper fuel filter mentioned a lot. I’ll take your word on the disconnect or valve. On the other forum I check in on once in a blue moon, nobody has mentioned it so that must mean guys aren’t checking their owners manuals again 🙄 Those guys figure parking on a slight incline does the trick or have around 1/8 tank of fuel.
