Some of your questions were a bit confusing to me, but perhaps its just me?
If you need to change the oil filter, you should change your oil as well.
As far as the fuel filter goes, not sure what you mean when you talk about bleeding the fuel filter. Some guys replace their filters with the bowl full of fuel and some guys like to empty out the fuel bowl before replacing the filter. I've seen it done both ways didnt seem to make a difference. Either way, make sure you take out the old gasket and get the new one fitted in there properly. I use Wix filters they come with pretty good directions.
i do plan on changing the oil..i have done it before but have never done the fuel filter on this truck.i just didn't know if i had to bleed the fuel system once i got the new filter in place, sorry if i was confusing ya
No worries on the confusion, I am confused easily, after all!
Well the real experts on here will chime in about full vs. emptied fuel bowl.. but i've changed mine on a completely full bowl and it worked just fine. Now I think fuel filters can change a bit with various years of 7.3's but I think they are all relatively the same.
on the filter housing there is a yellow lever that you rotate away from you to drain out the fuel. i recommend putting a length of 5/16 gas line to the end of the drain so you can put the drained fuel right into a bucket and it wont get all over everything. make sure all the o-rings are seated because they will leak if they arent, and put some fuel on the beveled o-ring on the cover of the fuel bowl. i get my filters at www.fleetfilter.com they are $16 last time i checked. napa and ford wanted like $50 for them so i ordered them over the internet
I'm with the drain and wipe too.
I've also drained it at every oil change and never had the water in fuel light and last filter was still pretty clean with 18K on it.
I just wait until I hear the pump do its thing with the ignition on before cranking her up and never a problem yet.
I use the Racor filters since they're almost free from a buddy of mine who works for the utility company.
Best gig I've ever stumbled into.
Oil, fuel and tranny Filters, coolant test strips, o-rings etc. All for the beer and tequilla I buy and help him drink of course.
I don't feel quite as bad when the elec. and gas bill comes in now either!
Does the 6.0 have 2 filters? I know my buddy changed the one on top of the motor and then we had to crawl underneath the truck and thier was another one down there.
I don't know about the 6.0 but the 7.3 only has one on top. Alot of people are running another filter back by the tank when they do the intank/pre-pump mods.
well, here is a belated update! i got the fuel filter changed. it was an easy job..just drained it and removed the old filter, cleaned, and running like a champ now.. thanks for all the info, this is a great forum!!
