Wiper motor wiring

I am in the process of wiring my wiper motor. I was not sure if my wiper motor worked or not, so I hooked up an external 12v battery to figure out which wires were what, I have three wires coming from the motor, motor is still installed and I never removed it. Found two that would make the wiper motor move so I thought I was in luck.
Followed my wiring diagram from Kiwi, but I was blowing the fuse to the wiper when I would turn the wiper motor on. Tried different wire combinations but all would blow the fuse. I ohmed out the wires to the chassis (ground) and all three wires have continuity to ground. So my problem with the blown fuses are a direct short to ground through the wiper motor on all three wires?

Any ideas...just a bad motor? What am i missing here? The motor works find when using an external battery, where the battery is not part of the ground circuit.

Have you ohmed the wiper switch to check if it’s grounding out when you turn it on?

I get 12v coming off the switch so I dont this is the issue. Switch seems to be working correctly, 12v at the wire to the motor when on, 0v when off.

I was only running one wire over to the motor from then switch, to the red wire, or at least what in think is the red wire as the wire color is hard to tell.

My thought, this should only give me low speed, and it will not park, which is ok for now.

is that my problem? How I am wiring it, I just dont understand how I can have continuity to ground on all three wires??

Do you have the original wiper switch on your truck? If you’re getting 12v off your switch to the motor and blowing a fuse when turned on my guess something amiss internally in the motor

Since you are referring to 12 volts I assume were talking 1956 here. Here is a diagram from a 56 Shop Manual. Hope it helps!

Hook up all three wires, make sure the black wire is plugged into the P terminal, that’s important, the red and green can go either way as they are the high and low mode.

Are you using the original switch? this switch has a rectangular fuse built onto it. It’s on the back side of the switch that’s pictured Above and don’t know what the amp rating is but I’m assuming it’s high. I have a refurbished motor and switch on my work bench if you want to go over anything

This is exactly right! I too am working on mine today and just as Wellcraft says the Black wire in this case is not ground, it is hot whenever power is supplied to the wiper switch via the the ignition switch. I imagine this provides the power to Park the wipers when they are turned off mid-wipe.
So try connecting your wiper motor wiring as shown in the diaphragms posted earlier and you should be good.

Thx for the response.
I am not sure if the switch is original or not, came in a bag from the previous owner. I will take it out and snap a picture tomorrow.

it does have four connections. Maybe i am wiring it wrong, as I am trying to just get the motor to .ove when it is on. I dont reall care about high/low are it moving to park position.
I still dont think all three motor leads should have continuity to group, but maybe if it is going through the motor windings.
I will plan to fully wire it and see what I get....
thx

note, the motor moves with no issue when I connect an external battery. So I dont think it is jammed.

All three wires leading into the motor are hot wires ( + side of battery) the black wire is for stoping the blades in the proper position. The red and green wires are your high and low speeds. The motor is grounded to the battery (-) when it’s bolted to the vehicle. If your switch isn’t like the one pictured that could be your problem providing all the wires are in their proper positions.

Here is a original wiper switch. The little vertically rectangular box on top (or in this case pictured to the right) I believe is a circuit breaker.

1956 stock wiper switch.

That is the correct switch and it’s wired properly. Something internally in the motor is not right, maybe a wire shorted out but that doesn’t explain why it works on another battery

Here is the wiper motor switch that I have in hand. There is a F,A,P, B terminal on the back. Last night I found a drawing that matches up with the three wire diagram post above going to what sounded like this style switch
How I was wiring it was hot from the fuse box to A and F out to the wiper motor. I then tried all three wires, separate tests, one at a time, and each time the fuse would blow.

still sounding like something with the motor? Could I have a 6v motor? Would that be the cause? The truck was not running when I started my build.
