I got a new Gentex GNTX-455 with compass and auto dimming off Ebay. I live too far from wrecker yards to spend a day trying to find one.

Thanks for the info! I'll run the wires after I receive it this week and get my new windshield installed next week.

Mirror arrived this morning. Looks good. Any suggestion on the most convenient ignition controlled power source? Just ground and power as I only have dimming and compass. I guess as it has a power button I could use a non ignition controlled power source too.

There is a plug for the factory mirror but it’s pretty inconvenient to get to, it’s on the A pillar post behind the dash and would require removing the ebrake, column and aluminum brace, not worth trying to get to.

Simplest would be hook ground up to a clean piece of metal and use an add a circuit to your fuse box on an ignition powered fuse.

Not sure if it’s been mentioned but if the problem is just deterioration on the glass portion of the rear view mirror, you can get a local glass shop to cut a veneer for it pretty cheap and then just glue it on over top.

Glass shops are time & gas & too far from me. Cheaper to replace and get upgrade to auto dimming and compass.

Add a circuit - Perfect! That's the way I'll go. I'll use an ignition controlled circuit to avoid having to turn it on/off and accidental battery drainage.

The auto dimming mirror is one of my favorite upgrades. Super easy to install and with all of the really bright headlights on the road today its nice to have. It definitely makes the truck feel a bit more modern too.

Well - this is odd. I thought I would get one of the add a circuits that goes up to 10 amps and put a low amp fuse in it as the mirror pulls milliamps I believe.
Looking at the fuse diagram the Auxiliary Fuel Tank Selector seemed a good location. But when I opened the fuse box there is no fuse in that slot. Yet my dual tank selector works. Hmmm......I've owned this truck since '95 and I'm confident the PO did not mess with the wiring.

I would just tap into the radio fuse, the wire coming off of the add a fuse is only good for 10amps but the fuse block itself is good for 20-30amps.

Yes. I'm going to use one of the other slots. Originally I misunderstood the ratings. I want the 10 amp rated wire so I get the smallest wire going out. I don't need a 10 ga. to 16/18/20 ga. (mirror wire) connection...

Project is complete. The Gentex GNTX-455 fitted onto my original wedge perfectly. It turns out that the Littlefuse 10 amp Add-A-Circuit also says not to power anything above 10 amps in either fuse slot (original fused circuit or new circuit), so the fuse holder is only rated combined 20 amps. I guess as the mirror only draws milliamps you could add a higher than 10 amp fused circuit in the original circuit slot. They do make a 20 amp version too.

I used the unused 10 amp slot that I described earlier that is ignition switch controlled. Works perfectly. Only put the mirror circuit fuse in it with a 3 amp fuse.

As mentioned it really modernizes the interior. The ground screw was right under the fuse box for a neat install. New windshield is coming on Tuesday.
Thanks for guidance!

Glad you got it working, don’t forget to set the correct region code in the mirror and run the calibration for the compass to be accurate

I’m not a fan of auto-dimming mirrors. How hard is it to reach over and flip the mirror up so it dims?
