I'm replacing the windshield on Old Brickie next week and I need to replace the rear view mirror which has some deterioration in the center. Can I just replace the mirror or does the arm need replacing too - as one unit/ I'd like recommendations on a good quality replacement. The original appears to be just over 11" x 2.25".
The mirrors come with the arm. The piece on the arm needs to match your mounting piece on the windshield. There are different shapes. Take yours to about any auto parts store and see if the arms have the same mounting surface and the mirror size is what you want. If not, you will need to buy the mounting kit to glue the new windshield part on. Sandy

Ok. I guess as I'm replacing the windshield I should have more options as I don't need to retain my existing mount.
Looking for quality recommendations.
If your not diehard on using an oem style mirror you can get an auto darkening one for cheap from any auto wrecker, can even get compass, temperature read out and garage door opener if desired. I usually just rip the whole thing off the windshield which gets the mount also and grab a bit of wiring and sensor if it’s a temperature unit. You can find them on eBay also. Just my opinion but I would never go back to the manual flip mirrors.

Hmm...Interesting ...what about running the electrical wiring?
The basic mirror uses 3 wires or 2 if you don’t care about it un-dimming when you put it into reverse.
Basic Wiring is: switch 12v, ground, reverse and if you get one with temperature display it will have 2 more wires running to the sensor behind the grill which you will have to grab and add in.
Very interesting. If you have a link to any I'd like to check them out. The wrecker yard stuff here goes to Mexico really fast so I may have to just buy.

Are you replacing the windshield or is a glass shop doing it? The shop will glue the button onto the windshield if it doesn’t already come with one installed from the manufacturer. As Sandy stated it is a rear view mirror assembly that slides onto the button.

Shop will be doing it. I'll have to check if it comes with a mount and also check if the mount matches whatever mirror I buy I guess. Also it seems some mirrors come without mounts. Are all the newer mounts standard size? Best thing I can do is find a mirror & matching mount.
Also I need an 11" or so mirror. I don't want a smaller car mirror.
When you drop the headliner retainer is it simple enough to replace it without messing up the headliner on these older trucks (Pucker free)? Any tricks? My headliner is in perfect shape.

No there are many different ways that mirrors attach to the windshield.
The metal strip across the windshield attaches with screws. Remove the screws for that piece and the “A” pillar panel. Depending on how long that metal piece has been on there it may tug on the headliner material so be careful. I don’t see why you would need to completely remove the headliner. .

I wasn't thinking about removing the headliner. I just wondered how it behaves when the long strip is removed and whether re-attaching the strip and getting the headliner tight is easy to do. Make sense? Might be over thinking it. I guess you just "squeegee" the headliner with the retaining piece toward the window.
I'll make sure I get a matching mount for whatever mirror I get.

Oh. Didn’t realize you did not know how the headliner works. It is glued onto a molded board. It is held in place by the trim panels and dome light. Removing the strip across won’t let it fall down.
