I don't usually post, just lurk, as I haven't purchased a super duty yet do to life circumstances. I do enjoy reading posts every week but never have anything to post until now. I am part of a technical rescue team and we are looking to replace our vehicles. Probably going with a 450 or 550 (current is a 350). Although, there is debate whether we purchase diesel vs. gas some have mentioned some Ford diesels that were more problematic in the past. Are there diesel years to avoid? Thanks in advance.
To avoid? No. Not really. Some of the early 6.7s had issues with dropping valves. Some had turbo issues. Some had regen issues. There are going to be other things that occur with some regularity, but nothing that means DO NOT BUY THIS YEAR. You can do a search on this forum and come up with threads that highlight the issues. But there was no 100-percent infection rate with any of these issues. And affected vehicles probably had the issue addressed already.
The only thing I would offer is to not buy any vehicle that has been modified. By that I mean a truck that has had its emission control functions disabled or deleted and an aftermarket tune applied. Some are okay, but you never know how well the execution so they are best avoided.
Typically when someones talking about problematic Ford diesels they are referring to the 6.0 (2003 - 2007) and the 6.4 (2008 -2010). I'd personally never buy a 6.4, but the 6.0 can be a great engine with the right upgrades. As for the 6.7, the early 11's had some valve issues and the turbos through 2012'ish seemed a little more prone to bearing failure. Other than that the 6.7 has been a good engine.
7.3 IDI - slow as mud but a great motor
7.3 turbo - faster. great motor
6.0 - much storied problems but after you pull out the notorious parts and put upgraded ones in, a better more powerful motor than the 7.3 according to some people
6.4 - only lasted 3 years for a reason. pass
6.7 - had to work out some issues in early production models but the last gen thru 2019 is extremely reliable and very powerful
6.7 - 2020. Seems like the changes they made were great ideas, however my most important factors are dependability so I bought a 2019 in 2020 since the 2019 6.7 had a great reputation and I got a good deal.
And as an additional note, I had a 2008 Duramax that I destroyed by letting inexperienced mechanics work on it. Ruined a great truck that was the last year of the diesel injected DPF. I had to sell it. I would never buy a diesel that someone modified. Diesels are like Corvettes, you just add a zero to the cost of everything above what the same repair would have cost on a gasser almost. You lose your keester FAST on one.
2008-2010. The 6.4L years.
Unless engine was deleted from the start, it’s killing EGR created a lot of internal issues.
If it was deleted from birth, it may be one of best, most well stock equipped engine platforms to make unreal torque sing a simple tune.
My 08’ was deleted at birth, made almost 1,200 lbs. of torque and was flawless for 7 years. Untuned/deleted trucks can expect an early death of number 8 cylinder by 100k.
