Nick, Does the tray next to the safe door lift off for, or does the safe use all the storage under it?
It does! It's the OEM tray, you just lift it up and you have open storage underneath. The safe only takes up half the center console nearest the driver.
So a vault is $300 and a Glock is $500. The cost difference means nothing for this analogy.
Then there's the fact that your deductible is $1,000 since they broke your window out.
And once they see the vault, they're going to go bananas because now they KNOW there's a heater inside it!!
So after they beat the living cowflop out of the interior of your truck with whatever they smashed your window with, and you return to a truck that looks like 12 blood diamond miners with pick axes dug for a 50 carat rock in your front seat, you're going to wonder why you locked up a $500 Glock in a $300 vault in a $60,000 truck now that all the afore mentioned investments are now substantially damaged or gone (because at this point the $500 gun is not the first thing on your mind)
Then you're going to wonder why you parked where you did.
Then you're going to actually keep your tools ON YOU and not leave a heater inside the truck.
Then you are going to drive a rental and have to actually keep your gun ON your body where it should have been to begin with.
THEN, after your truck is in the shop for three weeks, you're going to get it back and YOU ARE NOT GOING TO BUY ANOTHER CONSOLE VAULT because now you learned your lesson.
Just sayin...........
Fill out a few dozen reports with the above story each year and then come talk to me.
Wow! ...talk about closed minded. Tons of other scenarios that you did not list. Hope you are not a police officer with that mindset.

Soooo, to avoid all this - - - leave the windows down, doors unlocked and console open....

I fully understand his point. I have a vault that secures via a cable to the seat base in my truck. I use it ONLY when I cannot carry concealed into a venue. If a perp breaks into my rig and is intent on helping him/herself to my goods, I do not want the rest of my cab destroyed. My pal Roscoe is with me ALL the time and he is ready to go to work at a moments notice. I don’t know why anyone would use a vault in their truck or car, or a safe in their home to secure the one tool that, when you need it, it’s not there.

First off, you have to have a console. These SD's lend themselves to having a console vault with their massive storage space. I have a Lock 'er Down w/ the electronic lock. Actually bought 4 of them so far. Me, my son, and s-i-l have '17+ SD's and my daughter has a '19 Expi Limited. They are great at keeping things out of the reach of the kids/grandkids, and stashing some Franklins, extra magazines, etc... I have a S&W 9mm (no law against having a secondary piece, at least in Fl) that lives in mine, but in no way is concealing a pistol the only use for one of these. My wife's BMW and our Jeep have consoles that are too small for one of these so a cable tethered safe would be an excellent alternative.
I think the point of an in-car vault to secure a firearm is one of a legal defense in the situation your firearm is stolen from your vehicle and used in a burglary or murder. Imagine your costs defending yourself in court or worse, spending years in prison for negligence homicide. The cost of the vehicle is small potatoes.
