I've got a 72 Highboy that I put a 7.3idi and ZF5 in, originally it had 4.10 gears and with the trailer on it was a bit of a dog but liveable, this winter I swapped in a HP Dana 60 front and Sterling 10.25 rear out of a 1990 F350, the problem is that they have got 3.55 gears and the truck is a gutless gob now. I want to go back to 4.10 gears without spending a fortune. The truck initially had a Dana 60 rear in it. Can I take the gears from a Dana 60 Rear end and put them in a front high pinion axle? I don't know much about gears as I have never needed to get into them before. Here is the old girl in action.
If you're going to buy new gears, you need reverse cut 4.10 gears for a series 3 carrier to fit on the carrier you already have. You might get lucky and be able to find someone that will trade their 4.10 for your 3.55 but typically people want to go for deeper gears like 4.10, not taller, so that might be difficult.

Was there something wrong with the original axles? If not, I don’t understand why you ditched the “bit of a dog but live able” 4.10 axles to the newer 3.55 axles. That would have only made it worse for towing.
Put your old axles back in. Serving suggestion, possibly $1500 to $2000 cheaper.....
The old axles were a Dana 60 rear and a drum brake, closed knuckle Dana 44 front. The new axles are an open knuckle High pinion 60 with big *** rotors and a beefy 10.25 in the back. These axles are far better even if I do have to buy new gears.
Also there was much modifying to be done to jam these axles under here, not just a bolt the old guys back in.
I'm looking at used axles with 4.10 gears in and have come across a Dana 60 front from a dodge. If it is a high pinion with the reverse cut gears is there anything else that I need to be mindful of or will the gears from and HP dana 60 bolt into mine?
I am up for the challenge, I have a second truck to use if this one isn't right. Another quick question. I have a 1999 F250 parts truck in my yard, it has a Sterling 10.5 and a HP Dana 60 in the front, will these gears go into my 1990 axles? I'm not sure if they're 3.73 or 4.10. I have got them and they're free though so it would be nice if they would work.
While I dont know if they will swap, there is the possibility that they could be 4.30s as well depending on the engine. I think the v10 only got the 4.30 gear if I remember correctly.
1999 Superduty F250 might have a D50 solid front rather than a D60, worth double checking anyway. If they're 3.73 I wouldn't bother, 3.55 to 3.73 would not be enough improvement to be worth your time on install. What tire size do you run? Considering you thought 4.10 were a bit of a dog, I would go straight to 4.56.

Unless somebody swapped a Dana 60 into this truck, it came from the factory with a Dana 50 which will not swap into your housing.
Since you've got overdrive and big tires, I don't know why you wouldn't hop right into 4.56 gears at least. It will bring back some of the low end grunt to get you moving. Could go even lower if you desire.
You are correct. I finally found a marking on it that said it was a 229 axle which from what I have heard is the Dana 50. Damn. Thank You all for the help.
