I am nearing the point where I finally get to start spraying the cab, so I want to get all the paint/primer in order before I blast the cab.
I am doing a 100% factory restoration, so I’m planning on a single stage paint that will look more original than a base/clear. I plan on using the truck, so a single stage should be easier to touch up as needed.
I talked to the local paint dealer and they recommended an MTK Urethane. Almost all my paint experience is with enamels, so I wanted to run their quote by you guys to make sure everything looks good.
Im open to advice and suggestions, I haven’t purchased anything yet.
It looks like you are buying epoxy primer, 2K primer and paint all at the same time. Are you doing any body work after epoxy primer? Has the truck been driven for a while, a shake down run as such? My supplier suggests putting it into epoxy primer and driving it for a while or epoxy primer, then bondo work then more epoxy primer. Then drive it for a while before spraying the 2K and finish paint. I would just buy what you need for now. That way the next step will have fresh material.
OMNI is the economy line from PPG...good paint at a lower cost. As far as spraying the paint, you will not see much difference between the urethane and the enamel that you have more experience with. It sounds like this paint recommendation suits your needs nicely. Good luck...
I can say with certainty that the primer on my truck was black. There is still a ton of it under the original palisade green. It's also black behind the dash.
I just got done painting my deck over car-tractor hauler and a hay rack with PPG omni paint.I used a black top coat. The top coat [MTK9300] was 187.00 a gallon.Hardener was 72.00 a qt., and the reducer was41.45 a gallon. the MP170 primer was136.05 a gallon and 27.65 a qt.[MP175] for the hardener. So almost the same prices that you where quoted. I live in Minnesota so the prices must be the same all over the country. I've used the omni before on a few things, tractors and frames. The paint seems to hold up pretty well. I'm hoping to retire soon and paint a few tractors and a 49 F-3. I have done some painting over the years. I splurged on a new primer and paint gun. Make's me look like I know what I'm doing.
