I happen to have a new filter I bought for my 19 F450. It came with the black piece and instructions to install it over the hose connector on the middle (out) line on the filter. It doesn't include the red piece. This is just like the fuel line recall I got in 1988. For installed a metal piece over the fuel line connectors. And they were still using them in 1992 instead of replacing the original connectors.
Yeah, that sucks it breaks so easy. Ask me how I know. Truck is grounded til I find a new clip and get it fixed. And the nipple broke off in the line, so might have to replace that too if I can''t get it out. Some F-ing genius stuff right there, that you can break your truck by doing maintenance on it. i think next time I'll heat it up with a heat gun to soften it up next time. Heat gun and diesel - what could go wrong.
Why isn't there a recall on this huge safety issue?

I'm a little salty since I'm doing the maintenance before heading out on a 3 month trip with my camper. So in the meantime, my truck is grounded while I wait for the part to come. Even took the week off to be able get across the country to where I'm going to camp. So here I sit. I guess if the truck burns to the ground, there is no evidence that OEM junk is what caused it. No proof someone was killed or injured by it, so no recall I guess. Shame. Then to add insult to injury, they wont even sell you the part unless you buy the whole fuel line assembly with it. $166 for some hoses and a clip that will break next time you use it.
I get that your return line connector broke but did it have the reinforcement clip installed on it? My 2019 came from the factory with the reinforcement clip installed (built Jan 2019), not sure exactly when they started implementing it though. For around 5 years now, the Motorcraft fuel filter kits for the 17-19 have included the reinforcement clip to be installed on those trucks that did not come from the factory with the clip. So even if yours didn't come from the factory with the clip it should have been added if you had the filters replaced with Motorcraft filters within the last 5 years.
It didn't have the re-inforcement clip. Strange I've never gotten a cliip with my new filters either. Maybe they had old inventory when I bought them. I went to all the auto stores in town and none had just the clip, and none at nearby locations either.
Good to know at least they recognized the problem and started including a fix.
One of the parts stores actually opened a new fuel filter from their shelf, and it didn't have the new clip. Also, a couple stores said, "hey, I was just looking this part up yesterday" for someone else.
One of these days, I will begin my epic cross country camping trip. Already have my season pass for skiing. Now, to get there.
I'm going to attach a piece of 5/16 rubber hose in its place in the meantime and see how that goes. If I could just use the truck enough to load the camper on it would be a huge help. Not sure what was wrong with an old fashioned hose clamp. We'll find out. Need to replace the vent on the roof of the camper with a Maxxair fan, and the camper is pretty wobbly just resting on the jacks.

The fuel filter set that included the reinforcement clip was FD-4625-AA, it appears to have now been superceded by FD-4641 which no longer includes the clip. I guess Ford must feel by this time most 17-19's have had the clip installed. The clip part# alone is HC3Z-9A317-A. At this point the clip is useless to you though, it may have avoided the situation you are in if it had been installed previously.
That return line in that video does indeed have the clip on it but it wasn't even installed correctly lol (screen shot below). It's not actually attached to the base of the connector haha.
The main reason it broke however is because he was being way to rough with it, and that guy clearly didn't know how to release the connection. That one requires pressing in on the sides of it which he didn't appear to be doing.
That is a bummer on the timing of this happening for you and I hope you are able to resolve it so you can enjoy what sounds like an awesome trip.
Yeah my truck is a '19 and my line connection doesn't look like that at all. The Motorcraft replacement filter I installed in September of 2023 also didn't come with those clips.
