I’m looking at different options to mount a megnetic cb to the roof of my new to me 2017 f250. I have a Wilson 1000 antenna I would like to mount and the two options I have seen is removing the third brake light and taping some megnetic on the underside of the roof to make a megnetic spot. I tried that with some magnets and it was not strong enough. I did use rare earth magnets still not strong enough. Option two is a plate mounting that bolts behind the third brake light. I found Larson electronics makes a plate but it is way bigger then I need.
has anyone found strong enough magnets to work with this or a smaller size plate?
FWIW I have a tri-fold tonneau cover (aluminum)....I used nutserts to attach a 6" steel disc to the cover, and mounted my Wilson 500 to the disc. Ran the coax between the bed and cab, then through the rt rear door to my radio. SWR was less than 1.4. Not the optimum location, but, works just fine and easily removed as necessary.
I bought some metal plates on amazon. They had 3M tape on one side. I stuck them on the truck and my magnet mount antenna sticks. About $4 for a dozen or so metal plates. I have had the magnet mount fall off a few times on the highway doing 70mph and meeting a loaded log truck doing 60mph in the winter. Other than that, all is good. My magnetic mount cell booster antenna has never fallen off but that one is pretty small.
On my Kenworths (Fiberglas cab) I always just glued a small steel disc The same size as the magnet base to the roof for the business radios.
A. I was the only one knew it was there.
B. When asked how I kept a magnetic antenna stuck to the Fiberglas roof, I always answered that I found a fiberglas magnet and walked away!

Hahaha. Basically the same attachment method as myself but with a way better go to story. I’m definitely using that from now on. 👍
I use the Larson mount, they have two sizes, the smaller one is almost unnoticeable on a black truck unless pointed out to someone. I occasionally use my Wilson 1000 antenna.
Previously I spent a great deal researching and reading lots of forums and did found a high quality 3M magnet that covered a 1sq/ft area and could be cut with scissors for optimum size. I found that the roof ridges was an issue so went with Larson in 2017. Now with panoramic sunroof that was still my best choice and I remove the antenna when I don't use it or I don't want the eye sore.

I only see the one size from Larson. Does the plate stick over the roof or does it stick backwards over the bed?
