Exclamation Proper engine lifting

Hi guys-

I'm about to remove a 302 from an '88 bronco. I bought some grade 5 bolts from the hardware store. I then put these bolts into the center of the decks where the cylider head bolts would be, two on each side. I have chain connected to these four bolts, then running up to the hook on my engine hosit.

Is this safe to do? I'm worred that I'm going to snap the bolts.

thanks.

I lifted my 390 at two points and those points were the 3/8" bolts that go into the front of the head (rear on the other side) for the accessories. It weighs almost double that of the 302. I was using ARP 180,000psi bolts when I did it but that is still a big difference. Many people lift 600 pound engines with the four carb studs on an aluminum intake. It never seems to fail. You are talking about screwing bolts onto the head bolt bosses right?

Correct, I took off the both cylinder heads, and i put these four bolts into the head bolt holes in the middle of the engine.. so you think this is safe?

Absolutely. Overkill by a long shot if there was such a thing in this situation.

You were absolutely right, this home-made setup worked wonderfully.

i bolt the chain to an exhaust port one in the front and on the other side one in the back. i lift it with a frontend loader very slow. it works every time. and that is with the tranny still bolted up most of the time

Wink

You could pick up the front end of your truck with it bolted that way if the motor mounts would hold.
