This beauty has been a fun but costly, two year father and son project. It needs a new engine core unfortunately. Inline 6 with a Y in the VIN.
We have never replaced an engine. This maybe a terrible idea, but we have the time and energy to make an attempt. Don't have a tremendous amount of experience. We just replaced the lower and upper ball joints, plus U joints on front axles, replaced bearings, racers and hubs....but not a lot of engine experience. Just plan on taking lots of pictures and notes.
Looks like, Jasper, XP, ATK all sell the core for about the same price. Are there other vendors we should be looking at?
There are so many threads in the forum that I'm having a hard time finding members that have traveled this rebuild road already. Any advice or leads would be appreciated. And we are not beyond handing this job off to someone who knows what they are doing.
Where are you? Just to keep the issue confusing, I've a 6 in a 95 swb 150 that runs fine you can have. I'm in the middle of MN. Skoglunds@midwestinfo.net
So this is where my ignorance will shine. I don't know the difference between the two. When I think of core, I think of the entire mechanical part of the engine: block, header, crankshaft, rockers, etc. Seems like this is the what is available for order and then I pull what is good off the old engine. So things like...head cover and oil pan, electrical, manifolds, etc.
CORE was originally an acronym for Cash-On-Return. Like others said it's the part you return to be rebuilt.
It sounds like what you're looking for is a Long Block. This will likely have a core charge that will be refunded once you return your rebuildable core.
Example: Long Block price $1,500 + $200 core charge = You pay $1,700 up front, but you get refunded $200 when you send in your old long block that is in rebuildable condition.
I just Googled engine rebuilders Nashville. There are several to choose from. Having your original engine rebuilt would be the best way to go. Check them out and ask around.
