Fresh off the trailer

Here's a couple of pix of my newly acquired '62 flare side. The oral history that came with it is that it is a 3 owner Texas truck. Minimal rust and that is confined to body panels. The seller told me he wasn't a mechanic and I believe him, lots of small issues that were easily remedied a little labor and a few dollars worth of parts. My plan is to hop up the 223 a bit and add Vintage Air. Shoud make a nice daily daily driver once I swap the 3.70 pumpkin for something more highway friendly.

I think 3:70s are pretty hiway friendly. more than 3:89s. Time put ac on its going to lug it.

Added a 100 amp alternator to take care of the a/c electric load and headers/carb to boost the HP to carry the additional mechanical load of the compressor.

Good looking truck. My signature truck has the original 223. I'd be interested in the numbers you see in HP increase with the headers and carb. I'll drive Susie Q all day without AC but getting the Mrs in it will be challenging without it!

Clifford claims a 70% increase in HP but I think that is pretty optimistic. Right now seat of the pants dyno feels like a noticeable gain in power and I still haven't got my recurved distributor back from the tuner. I'm waiting to get the engine fully dialed in before I tackle installing the air. The truck was refurbished in the late 80's so there is a lot of minor cosmetic issues to deal with. Just finished installing the bed kit the seller provided and

added voltmeter and oil pressure gauges.

Very solid inside and out. My "wrongbed" will need some work and the tailgate is in rough shape. But it has a lot of ... character.

Lots of patina there. I'd be hard pressed to keep it as is or restore. Either way it looks like a solid start.

You describe my conundrum perfectly, Chief. I know I want to get down to every bolt and nut, eradicate some pesky rust spots and refresh all the mechanics. So, to do all that leave her "au natural" is counterintuitive. That said, what endears me most about Susie Q is she brings all the memories of my Dad and Mom. To make her "new again" would be quite a tribute; but to remove much of what I love about her now...don't know. Ugh...I sound like my wife out shopping!

Like the seat cover, is that a custom made job or some aftermarket stuff?

It looks to be a custom job and from the condition of the padding I think it was done when the truck was redone in the late 80's. I'm going to pull the seat to install the A/C and plan on new padding while it is out. Thanks for the compliment.

Nice truck to start with, many Flaresides were bought by governments and public utilities and were not pampered. A full syncro box from a '63-'64 would be a nice upgrade.

I wouldn't touch it, leave it the way it is, very presentable and has all its original character, why worry about getting scratches and chips all the time? IMO, invest in mechanical upgrades only.
