Build thread...done

This project has been a long time in the making. It all started some 5-6 years ago when I was looking for some rust free doors for my 2001.

I did find some Texas doors….attached to a cab. The cab is titled. The cab and doors received sound deadening materials as well.

I noticed a that he also had a blasted and epoxy coated frame…which I brought home too.

It was a leaf spring frame, and it received a coil spring front axle from a 2007. Rebuilt the front axle using Spicer ball joints and steering parts….and oh, 4:10 gears to match the 2008 4:10LS rear axle. Denny’s Driveline for those parts. That rusty steering gear is from a 2015 F350.

The 2015 steering gear (it’s really nice, turns with minimal effort) presented a couple of challenges. 1) the bolts holding it to the frame are huge, and drilling the frame out is terrible. And 2) The bigger gear gets in the way of the front sway bar mount.

A picture of the D60 front ring gear pattern after swapping the 3.73 for 4.10.

Drive side

So then I found a 2008 4:10 LS rear…mounted that up. (had to remount one of the shocks on the frame). Installed a B&W turnover hitch and some air bags. New rear springs from ATS.

Also installed independent ride height sensors left and right.

Oh, you saw the air hose?

Viair 400c feeding a 3 gallon SSTL tank. And if you have OBA, you might as well have some access to air.

I had run the S&B intake, but I was never really happy with the Gen 1 fit and the cheesy battery tray, so some coin to RiffRaff and some left over 4” exhaust tube. It went together well, and with the SXE364.5, there is no increase in noise.

The bumper is a Move DIY. That was a fair amount of work, and the powdercoat company brought in a textured color that is a pretty good match for the Raptor grill.

The sandblasting brought out a few pin holes in the welds that I didn't get to address before the pain was applied...oh well.

Some LED lights from Super Bright LED rounds it out. When I had the dash out I did wire for the turn signals and heat for the mirrors.

I still have the interior to finish, the wait time from the Leather Seats covers is 5 weeks….and some NFab SSTL steps. I might (probably) go with pocket fender flares.

Congratulations Dan! That bumper (among many other things) turned out great. How's she drive?

I won't complain about tire noise to you....but with all the sound deadening products in there....that's the bulk of the noise now. She drives straight and true, I would have liked the alignment shop give a bit more caster (it's 2.5 both, would have liked to see it up around 4).

Now it's just checking/re-torquing things like the gooseneck hitch, spring u-bolts, any suspension brackets that were installed with the coil spring front.

LOL indeed

Is the ride a lot smoother with that coil front? Have you gotten her up to speed to check for death wobble?

Here's the thing...I'm sure the front is better over the bumps, but the rear got firmer with the 3300lb springs. (it had 3000). I carry a bunch of pin weight with the horse trailer, but in hindsight (and I might just do it) is talk with Junior @ATS about pulling a leave. That would lower the spring rate, and I still have the air bags for ride height. You'll note the overload...that will never touch unless I have an air bag failure....which has happened....and the only reason I spec'd the springs with the overload.

Death wobble....just had to go there didn't you?

I need to give a shout to @Nicmike . He is the author of a glorious coil spring conversion thread that I used a lot to do the swap, and figure out the power steering hoses..the 2015 box is a new twist on it.

Or just carry sandbags when unloaded/not towing? Alternatively, lower rear tire pressure and air up when you have to since you have OBA.

Sorry. Touchy subject?

Touchy? Not to me, but go over the 2017+ forum, search that term....and you can read for about a week. If I experience DW, I know how to fix it. I've got about 1000 miles on it, probably 300 pulling the trailer. The turning radius is nice, but you probably wouldn't see that gain with those thing you call tires on your truck. And the the bigger brakes....are nice.

I'm going to have it in town tomorrow, picking up the NFab steps. I'll throw your bender in and we can meet up.....somewhere where the city isn't on fire.

What? I know not of these 2017+ trucks you speak of. I am firmly planted in the Mesozoic Era of trucks.

Nice. I was going to ask about the improved turning radius but then you took the wind out of my sails. Good to hear about the bigger brakes too.
