CRUISE CONTROL INTERMITTENT

Have a 1993 F150 XLT, 5.0, E4OD with an intermittent cruise control; mostly non-functioning. At the suggestion of a local mechanic I changed the pressure switch near lower frame, disassembled and cleaned cruise control switches on steering wheel, replaced the multi switch for unrelated issue, new brake master. Seems like every time I try to fix issue the CC will work for a very short time then not. When non-operation a buzzing or humming noise can be heard when the set button is pushed. All lights are working and there are no codes. Thoughts and/or suggestions?

The only time I ever had a CC problem was with an '89 Cadillac. On a hunch I replaced the vacuum actuator/pot and that was it!
I think I tried testing it, by hand manipulating the diaphragm and blocking off the vacuum ports to see if it would release or hold, but I don't remember that being too successful which is why I took a leap of faith.

I don't want to spend any more of your money on a witch hunt, but the diaphragm is the only thing I can think of that would be as prone to failure, or even more so than some of the electric components.

Good luck!

Paul

93 up has an electric speed control servo that often causes sporadic operation as you describe, but I personally have never heard any associated buzzing sound.
Don't think there is a way to test it other than to swap a known good unit to see if correct operation resumes.

My 93 is on it's 3rd servo, my 95 is on it's 2nd and my 97 has the "known good" unit that I use to test with.

Many years ago I had a similar problem...turned out to be nothing more than the brake light switch out of adjustment...kicking off the cruise (and turning on brake lights) now and again. That was back when everything was much simpler.

I’m having intermittent issues with my 1993 5.0 as well, minus the buzzing sound. Thanks for the info. I would be thrilled to have this fixed.
