Exclamation E4OD harsh shifting

Have a 95 f150 4.9l 2wd E4OD 187k miles. Was told when I recently bought the truck that the trans was rebuild but no papers to show. He replaced the wiring harness also. So far I have done the solenoid pack(out of a spare trans) and new trans filter with neither fixing the shifting issue. I've ran the codes and get 624 which is the electric pressure solenoid I believe. I'm stumped and need help. Im good with most things on vehicles but when it comes to the transmissions I'm lost.

Harsh shifting is what the PCM is programmed to make the trans do when it sees a problem, so you have to fix whatever is causing that code... could be the sensor itself or the wiring between it and the PCM. You say the trans wiring has been changed? If so you need to verify that it is pinned the same as the original.

The pressure control solenoid is what controls harsh or soft shifts. You have a problem with the pressure control solenoid, so it cannot control the shift properly. As mentioned above it is either the EPC (Electronic Pressure Control) solenoid or the wiring to the solenoid.

Can you explain how I verify the pins? I dont have the original wiring harness for the truck. The harness that the PO got came out of I believe a 96 150.

if this is you would you consider just replacing the Solenoid pack with a brand new one? Or is there a way I can test the sensor itself? Reason being is that as stated in my initial post that I got the current pack out of a trans from another truck we had at one point not sure if there was issues with that one before it got pulled by the father-in-law. I should mention I have read on another forum that there could be an issue with the PCM? If anyone has has similar issues please let me know what you did to fix the issue.

You can read the resistance across the solenoid. That will tell you if it's good or not. It could also be a problem with the wiring between he PCM and the solenoid. There is a very, very slight chance that it's a bad PCM, but that is very rare.

those solenoids are in the trans pan. How would I test those since it's in the trans without dropping the pan?

You can get to the pins on the connector on the driver's side of the trans. Or you could drop the pan.

You can make your own "test harness" by hopping on ebay and getting a "E4OD repair harness / E4OD Wire Harness Repair Kit (note; there are early and late E40D differences. pre and aft '94.)

Which, could be what's wrong too. You can take a quick look at it to see if it's totally shot with exposed wires, which is sometimes the case.

E40D: The Importance Of A Clean Trans Harness

I mean if it looks anything like that bad one in the link, you'd know to just go ahead and replace that before even bothering doing much else.

So I've went ahead and order the wiring harness replacement so that should come I the mail hopefully within the next week or 2 then I'm gonna see what happens. I also decided to buy a brand new solenoid pack and am doing a completely transmission flush. Hopefully this will correct the issue with the harsh shift. I'll be sure to post back when I get everything completed.

Ouch. That's a very expensive way to find out if a pack is bad. It's very easy to test it. If it's good, you just threw $300 away. I would of just checked to see if all it needed was $30 plug first.

And just out of curiosity, is your speedometer giving you any trouble lately? Maybe not reading at all, or behaving erratically?
Changed the cluster by any chance?

I don't think any of those would throw the code you have, but a speedo problem can indeed cause a harsh shifting.

I'm not going to be installing the new pack until I find out if the current one is bad. I got it as a precaution. I'm still testing everything but wanted to make sure I had one in case that is the issue. But to each their own.
