Starting Issues

History:

Replaced under standard me maintenance
oil/filter, fuel filter, cap/plugs/rotor/wires

Running with vacuum line off and plugged for EGR testing to verify if I need the Restrictor plate to fix many of my drivability problems. Which so far it has, except...

Current Problem:

This has been occuring for some time, even before the experiment for the restrictor plate. First start of the day or after it has cooled down (usually sitting for 2 hours or more) the first start attempt fails. Starts, idles at 1200 for a sec, spits, sputters, dies. If I feather the gas it will run but takes a while to smooth out. If I let it die, the try again. Starts like a champ. I have searched, and read similar problems, but could not find any definitive answers, just alot of questions. Does anyone have an idea?

From: Wanatah In,
I have the same issue, its done it for a long time. I also have a restrictor plate installed. I seem to suspect possibly a fuel issue?? I havent really investigated it a whole lot, it always starts right up after the first try. I'll be intersesed to see if anyone else has had this problem and how they fixed it.

okay, as ive dealt with this many many times on other Ford EFI systems, your most likely cause is the IAC, located ontop of the throttle body.

what you may wanna try doing is after it warms up, while its running, disconnect it. if you notice a big change in your RPM, or it dies completley, then your IAC is fine.

the other thing that may be at fault is the Coolant Temp Sensor. best way to check it is to take an ohmeter and probe the 2 pins on the sensor itself when its dead cold, then again after its warm (both cases, engine off)

you should see a difference in both figures. when its warm, it should have high resistance (large number) when its cold, low resistance (small number)

From: Wanatah In,
I had a iac go bad once but it just wouldnt idle at all, but it does make sense that if it were in the minor stages of going bad that it may be a little lazy explaining why it starts fine on the second try. I'll check it out.

The Throttle Position Sensor might be going bad. Its easy to check if you have a Haynes or Chiltons. I can't remember the procedure off the top of my head. A bad TPS can give goofy problems like yours.

I had suspicions about the IAC so I will attack that first and move on to the other issues as I go. Thank you very much for your responses and I’ll let you know how it turns out.
