Guess I’ve gotten lucky with my 18. No electrical problems yet but it’s been in the shop for just about every other sort of problem. Kept my 04 6.0 for 14 years before deciding to replace it. New truck’s been in the shop more in two years than the old one was in all 14! I like to keep ‘em a long time but right now I’m not confident this ones going to make it that far!
I hear ya about keeping them for a while. I had far less trouble will the 2006 6leaker. At least the 06 was only in once for an oil leak (definitely lived up to the name).
I’ve had a few electrical issues in my 18. The ebrake warning light stopped working so I though it was the switch. Turned out to be a pinched wire harness behind the dash. The dealer had to remove the entire dash all the way to the firewall to get at it. I’ve also had a throttle position sensor fail and the 7 pin wire harness had to be cleaned Once and replaced once. This is my first ford and it’s not a warm welcome that’s for sure.
I had similar issue on my 2019 F350 with push button start.
Infrequently when start button was pushed the starter would not engage and I would display. blind spot fault, cross track fault, pre collision assist not available etc. Dealer had it 3 times for a total of 30 days and were not able to duplicate it.
I documented it several times on video. The culprit was the Start/run relay. Contacts were corroded.
I was all set to lemon law it when they found the cause.
Not all but much of the electrical gremlins are the result of un greased connectors on the frame.
When I heard about this issue I checked mine to find the one on the drivers side filled with water. At 500 miles from new.
Ill inspect and re grease all these connections every year going forward.
For me... every new vehicle has far too much BS electrical complication. It seems to me theres little likelyhood these current computer dependent vehicles will be usable in 20 years.
Seems like a long way off.... but for a 3/4 ton truck used as a car... the vehicle should last until the owner gets bored of it. Even if thats 40 years...
I use Truck Lite. 97940. They have it at Napa. My mechanic is a Boss Plow dealer and he uses that on all the control connections. Which are the same kind of small wires. that's what he recommended and I use it on all my plow and spreader connections. Never had an issue.
It has been said that the clearish opaque stuff for ignitions is high voltage. Although Ive used that on low voltage connections as well without issue.
This grease is brown.
