Crossflow or downflow radiator.

Either will work fine. I owned a radiator shop for 20 years and never figured out why they switched from down flow to cross flow. They both performed well, but the down flow was easier to fill, and easier to check circulation. The important thing is clean tubes and solid fins, doesn't seem to matter which way it flows.

The switch from downflow to crossflow was to get a wider, lower profile, radiator. This was a result of the lower hood heights that started being produced.
The old, top to bottom flow was originally designed for thermosiphon systems, where there is no water pump.
Personally, I like traditional, top and bottom tank radiators.
