Just saw this article and wanted to let people here know if you have some. I double checked on HF website and they are recalled. I'll be checking mine tomorrow morning.
If you read the comments at The Drive there is a guy there that just got his finger damaged from one of those collapsing, not fun to look at. I went to the HF site, it looks like they have new in that weight class, more expensive.
For decades there have been crappy jack stands out there, Sears, NAPA, Pep Boys used to sell these cheap sheet metal jacks with pin height adjustments. There’s a lot of cheap crap out there.
That's going to be a tough one. I've looked at several sites, even Hein-Warner stands look exactly alike. They may be fine at $100 for the pair, but did they come from the same factory? Were the HF the rejects out of that factory or just a copy of good ones as China always does? Do you get to the point where you have possibly check the country of origin?
The stands we had at the test facility were from the ‘30s to ‘50s. Those were the heaviest stands I ever encountered. Some were for tractor trailer work. We even had railroad jacks since our earlier company involvement included railroad products. I doubt that where we shipped everything too ever used any of that.
I really prefer stands that use a pin rather then a tooth catch for piece of mind.
I just returned a pair of the 6 ton stands there. Thanks Motohead911 for posting this!!! I was going to perhaps get some 12 ton stands just for the extra height, but they were out of everything. In the end, I'll be better off spending the extra money to get quality stands (as mentioned above), because a lot of what you see online has the same fabrication/mold appearance as what I just returned. Different paint, different sticker, same factory in China.
Maybe I'll check out Craigslist and find some 50 yr old, heavy as hell stands like my grandfather used to have.
Over on another site a member brought up a different design with a secondary pin lock, which I prefer. They are offered under various brand names but these are the least expensive offering I found if anyone is interested. From Northern Tool, they run about the same price as the HF, but many of us will have to add shipping.
