I need to rewire my 53 when I get the new cab on. What are some good kits to use? Am thinking American Autowire? They have two kits. The more expensive one is called 53-56 Classic Upgrade has special connector for original Ford steering column which I am using. Also how is the battery gauge hooked up? Mine only has a loop on the back no place to hook up wires
I used the 53-56 kit from American Autowire and the instruction and ease of install were great. Every wire is labeled for what it goes to or is and all the connections you will need in the box. Only thing you will need is wire cutters and crimpers.. Great customer service too. Yes it was a little pricey but as I said I really liked the kit.
Not sure for battery guage since I only have an idiot light but you can pull up the installation instructions online and check them out.
I bought this 22 circuit kit from speedway motors that is very nice. I particularly like the instructions that come in the form of large easy to understand diagrams that relate to different sections of the vehicle. The whole kit was about $200.

Are you running an alternator now? Just pass the output wire through the loop from right to left, looking at the back of the ammeter. Do not strip the insulation.
A have an alternator installed in my truck and the American Autoware kit includes wiring to hook it up. You can go on the website and pull up the instructions for it. The instructions have alot more info in them than they did when I did mine.
Not sure about the amperage. What about wiring kit from Midfifties? Is it a good kit? I am working with a budget
That's why I asked if you bought the alternator new or used. A new or rebuilt unit will have the rating on the box, or at least a mfgr's reference to it. I don't know which MidFifty kit you are referring to so don't have an idea of alternator output wire size. I think you'll be safe using AWG 6 alternator output wire size though.
Midfifties 21 custom circuit kit. In my 2017 catalog was 234.00 but sure it is more now. My alternator has three wires. I know one is the power wire the other two that plug into the same spot I am not sure of.

The small red wire is the sensing circuit and should be connected to the battery side of the starter relay. The other small wire is the field, which should be white, should be connected to the "I" terminal on the ignition switch. But since your wires don't match the color code, all bets are off. Hopefully your alternator is rated under 50 amps, that output wire looks like AWG 12 or 10. And of course you need an electrical ground to the alternator case.
