I am having a problem getting the caliper retainer in. It's a tight fit by it's self and no way the spring is going to fit. The calipers are reman ford units. The retainers are aftermarket. The truck is a 76. I have no idea what is going on.
Are you sure you have the the correct calipers and have the correct retainers? And are you sure the top part of the caliper is seated in the caliper mount bracket correctly?

Did the calipers change from 73-79 on the f100? My research showed the same part number for all the years.
Are you talking about the caliper support key? I had that problem with my 73 when I got reman calipers. First thing I would try is seeing if your old key fits. That worked on one side for me. What I had to do on the other side was gently file the key (a little more so on the end that goes in first) and then tap it in with a hammer. Don't file too much though, file a little and check. If there are any burrs on the caliper itself where it slides in, knock those off.
Well the sites check fit/applications said yes, your truck 4wd? I seen that application mentioned a lot. I did not dig deep into the #'s, but that one link you posted said it is for the left side. Is the bleed port on the top?
The key has 2 notches because it's universal for both sides you can't get it wrong. it's chinese reproduction keys you're fighting toss them and use the originals.
