My 1977 F150 left front brake caliper has siezed, it looks like the piston is out of round, or something silly like that. I had to pump it out of the caliper, and now it will not fit back in!! The piston seems to be made of some composit material, as in, not steel. Anyone got any tips or tricks on how to fix this....or do I need a new piston?
Cheers,
Shane
Yup, I agree, replacing them would be easier....but as I am in New Zealand, 2 weeks freight away from the 'states....new calipers are a bit out of reach....especially if you include the exchange rate and shipping costs.....
Any tips on rebuilding them?
Thanks,
Shane
Have a look at the Rockauto site KiwiFord, calipers for your truck start from about $10 US.
I've had parts for my truck out here within 2 days, usually 4-5 at the door.
Sometimes worth buying locally (you could try Advanced Four Wheel Drive in Auckland) or repairing, but I find generally not.
It's good to get feedback from a fellow Nz'er!!
I looked at Rockauto, and will see how I go. The caliper is good, it's just the phenolic piston seems to be swollen....what do most people go for, a steel piston, or the phenolic one? Why did Ford go with phenolic? To stop rust?
Thanks,
Shane
Sorry, I didn't realize how far away you are!
You will need the pistons and the rebuild kit which has the seal for the piston and the protective retracting boot.
I would rather have the steel pistons.
I will go with the steel pistons. Wonder why Ford went phenolic? Cost? Heat transfer? Who knows!
I will probably go with RockAuto, they are happy to export parts.
Thanks,
Shane
