HELP ME PLEASE. I bought this 1983 Ford E350 Glendale RV. I'm having a power issue after driving it for about 400km I stopped at a light and it stalled out. I needed to boost the battery. Got it home took the battery out had it tested and it was all good just needed a charge. Ok.... I'm thinking alternator I buy a new one put it in and take it out for a test drive still dying and still needing a boost to get it going. So if the battery is good and its a brand new alternator what else could it be. Camping season is coming and I'm trying to get this thing ready. HELP PLEASE.
If you didn't also check and/or renew/replace the cables that could be your problem. A vehicle that old could have multiple issues with original wiring.
Most times its better to get a qualified diagnosis rather than just start buying parts to change without knowing if they need replacing or some other aspect needs to be inspected or repaired---that's called "firing the parts cannon......." at a repair.
I believe the 1983 vans have a external voltage regulator on them. Have you tested the voltage regulator?
This information below is for a 1985 van that has a voltage regulator and should not be much different then your van... What size engine do you have? Do you have a amp-meter gauge or a alt light ? Is your alternator a side or rear terminal alternator?
annaleigh i have a few questions. Do you know how what type of inline fuse I'd need? 125amp?
To answer your question my alternator is rear. I did put the new one in and tried a new ground to see if that was corroded away but that didn't anything.
No I do not know what size fuse link you need.
1- What is the amp rating on the alternator you replaced? Stock from ford was 40-70 amps
2- On your instrument panel do you have a gauge or light for the alternator?
3- Have to looked to see if you have a voltage regulator?
newer alternators have the voltage regulator built into the alternator. Older vans had a separate voltage regulator mounted near the battery. If the voltage regulator goes bad that can cause the alternator not to charge the battery.
