Rear diff: Wtf is causing this

Rear diff: Wtf is causing this
Finally got around to changing

my front and rear diff fluid and transfer case fluid. I bought it at 118k and everything was freshly changed now I have 245k and saw this on the rear diff. I have been told it was from a loose pinion bolt. Wanted to get y’all’s opinions. Thanks.

I have seen that when the pinion bearings go.

As IMSAP said! The bearings have worn and allowed the pinon to push back into the carrier.

Well I did some further inspections and found the pinion nut was loose.

yea I pulled the nut put some lock tight on it and reinstalled it

besides need to do a fluid change, did you have any noise that didn't seem right when driving? at any speed? just curious

no I didn’t hear anything unusual but I also have loud tires.
