I'm a newbie to FTE and f250 diesel owner. I have found FTE to be a plethora of information and have learned alot about diesel engines. But, I have read so much that now I'm confused and frustrated. Here's my problem... I have taken possession of my dad's 94 f250 7.3 idi diesel turbo (not a powerstroke) 5 speed manual transmission with 235,000 miles. A few weeks ago it started getting hard to start. Once I got it started I had to keep it running until the engine got warm. If I allowed it to stall it was even harder to get started. Once the engine was warm it ran like a champ. Now I can't get it to start at all. My fuel filter light came on, so I replaced that. I also replaced batteries and starter. When I replaced fuel filter I noticed alot of what looked like mud in the bottom of the fuel filter housing. With all the reading I've done about fuel and starting problems, I've found it could be a number of things and I don't know where to start . I also got a innova 1345 obd 1 code reader hoping it might narrow things down, but not sure it will work on my engine. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.
since you do not have an E4OD automatic transmission you do not have a PCM in your truck so that code reader will not do you any good. the engines do not use a computer.
it sounds alot like you developed air intrusion. try and purge your fuel line being you pulled the filter you may have a air pocket preventing flow. it also take a bit of cracking after replacing a fuel filter for the system to re prime.
ya could be the new filter needs to be bled ... but the "MUD" thing is worrisome,
Hence reason for posting the link to the other thread as this was recent thread on the subject.
Seems like it would not start before the filter was changed IF I read the op correct.
The Filter light comes on when the Transfer Pump pulls a Vacuum on the filter head.
you can essentially plug the fuel outlet from the filter and just run a hose direct to the IP and it will prime and pull all the fuel it needs from a Gas Can.

maybe the fuel pump went out. i would check if any fuel is getting to the filter.

Well, she started! Thank you everyone for your suggestions and advice. It appeared to be air intrusion. I located the shrader valve and released air from there. Boom! Started right up. What a relief. Also, what a difference the new starter made. The old one was 25 years old (I got my money worth) . I learned a lot about diesel engines from this site and I'm hooked. Thanks again! Be safe
good to hear it was just air, but that mud in the filter is a concern. run some biocide and diesel clear threw the system to prevent another plugged filter.
