I just bought a 1962 F100. I thought it had a 300 but it only has a 223. It has a 3 on the tree but i want to switch to an automatic. Ultimatley, I would like a 300 with a c4 or c6. Is there any transmission that will interchange with a 223 and 300?
The 3 speed seems to be fine except when I down shift. I have a bad left leg and using the clutch, especially in town, makes it a bit hard to drive. Since this will be my only vehicle, I decided I better go with an automatic. I can't afford to change everything at once, so I thought I would start with the transmission and go from there. I know the 300 will interchange with a 302, just not sure if the 300 will interchange with a 223.
No, the transmissions that bolt behind the 223/262 won't bolt to a 240/300. I am not aware of any adapters but if you go to a 240/300 then you could get an AOD - Automatic OverDrive - they bolted them behind later year 300's which are the same bolt pattern as any 240/300. I'd go with a 300 over a 240 just to get the cubic inches. You might need a flexplate if the engine doesn't have one or has a flywheel. Then you'd just need some linkage to shift the automatic, and a kickdown arrangement for the Throttle Valve. Cooling for the transmission could be handled through a radiator swap assuming your current one has no connections for a transmission or a separate cooler could be added. And a vacuum source for the modulator. AOD is basically the overdrive version of the C4. Perfect for a 300 big six I think. Avoid an AOD-E electronic version so you don't have to worry about a computer.
You'd also want to swap to a side-to-side engine mount adapter. The front/back won't work from the 223 to a 300 unless you had the front horseshoe support from a 65/66 300 4WD but then you'd need to fashion your own rear support - I'd go to a side-to-side mount.
You could just try to find an auto that will bolt up to your engine. I don't know if the Y block has the same bellhousing pattern as a 223. Here is a place that says they have one but they don't say what engine is in the truck. Give them a call you might luck out. If Chad hasn't gotten there firstWhiteside Auto Wrecking | Snohomish, WA
thanks for the posts, it really helped. I live on a limited income so I have to piece it out. Was hoping to start with the trany and end up with the engine, but I think I'm gonna have to follow your direction TA. I'll have to research a bit and find an AOD, and see what all im gonna need for this. That is exactly what I wanted when all is said and done.I think the overdrive would be an even a bigger bonus. I bought it a week ago for $2800.00, it seems only worthwhile to put a little bit into it. Thanks again for the comments, it helped me decide.
