I have a 06 F-150 w/ 5.4l gas 3 valve engine. Apparently, the timing chain tensioner gave way and the chain came off and put a hole in the passenger side valve cover. Replaced valve cover and got kit to replace oil pump, water pump, both phasers, chains, sensors, tensioners, everything that attaches to the front of the motor, basically. Sent heads out to get looked at and they were fine. Got them back and put everything back together and shows passenger side cam phaser in full retarded position. My mechanic said that it was defective. So I get another one. Same problem. Then he had me change coils. Still no help. I fire up the motor and it sounds like it wants to grenade on me. Worse than a diesel engine. Now they are telling me they think it's a clogged oil journal and they want to pull the motor and completely rebuild. Is there anything else they can do/check/clean that they can do before I have it pulled and rebiult?
HOW is it being determined that passenger side (Bank 1) cam is in full retard position? What codes or diagnostic data is this based on. Same question for replacement Phaser? I would be suspicious of a mechanic who even suggested changing COILS under those symptoms, With heads removed, it is certainly possible some foreign matter got into oil pasageways starving the phaser, But before pulling engine, I would definitely want to know more about what's going on.
