Hi, I have a 2001 xl 7700 5.4 bifuel rwd with 137,000 miles. It has had the cam phaser knock problem for about a year.
The other day while driving, the engine started making a loud rattling noise inside, like something snapped and was banging around inside. It immediately lost power, died and made an oil burning smell. I assume the cam phaser or something around it finally failed.
A lot of people report catastrophic engine failure when that breaks, or at least bent valves. I am debating whether to take the heads apart and try to fix the phaser/follwer/tensioner or just assume the engine is toast, and put a new one in.
I have never done either of these types of jobs, but am willing to figure it out. It felt like the engine was seizing when I was driving it off the road into a parking lot.
What are the chances that taking it apart and fixing it will be a waste of time/money that ends up needing engine replacement anyway?
2001 would not have VCT so no cam phasers in it if it has the original engine. You could have had a timing chain or tensioner break both of which could destroy the engine, I would pull the valve/rocker/cam covers (what ever you want to call them) and look to see if the damage is obvious, I would think catastrophic valve train damage would be. Another option would be a compression test, that might give you some insight into the issue.
I wonder if the knock you were hearing was a failed timing chain tensioner (I don't know if that was an issue in the 2 valve 5.4L or not) and the chain finally broke or came off.
This guy shows how to rebuild a 5.4 motor ........ go to page 5 or so and look at the motor with valve cover and front chain cover off....... you should be able to see a LOT if they were off ..... worth a try before you pull heads or crank the motor over too many times and bend a valve.
So, since it is the vin z bifuel, and those are hard to find, what about a regular non-bi-fuel vin L version? If I swapped out the ECU and wiring harness, what are the chances it would work if I need to replace the whole engine?
