Bump side with Hydroboost power steering problems

Hey everybody, I just got my 71 F250 back together after Idi swap. I didn’t know which forum Would be the best fit for my question but here goes. I have a Ford power steering pump with the dual inlet for return, hydroboost,And 1978 F250 power steering box. For the life of me I cannot get this pump to stop whining. The old pump I originally had in it did not have issues when it was in the donor truck but just to eliminate the pump problem I bought a rebuilt one from NAPA. Still have a lot of pump noise. Brakes work great steering works great. I’ve tried every possible combination for bleeding The system I could find. Jacking it up, turning it back-and-forth with the engine running and not running, pulled vacuum on the reservoir with running and with it not running. Pump the brakes turn the wheel etc. I even tried cracking one of the pressure lines to see if I got bubbles or foam and didn’t see anything abnormal. This is going to make me insane. Now I know everybody’s gonna jump on me about not using the Saginaw pump but Ford came out with the system stock so it should work. Thanks for reading all this I hope somebody can help

So there is a thread somewhere in 67-72 or 73-79 where they switched the return lines and it made the fluid less aerated and solved there pressure problem. Might be worth a try.

That was me!
I lived with the whine for a year. Then, I switched the return lines, and the whine stopped instantly!
I fixed the power steering, but I'm not sure how to post a link to my own thread........

What ever made you try to do that in the first place? Why does it work? I’ll probably try to do that this weekend

Never mind just got the link to your old post and my return lines are opposite of the picture in the post. I’ll switch them this weekend and see how it goes.

OK I got home today and switch the Return lines. Fired it up and still doing the same thing. I looked in the reservoir a little closer and there is some micro bubbles on the return side of the filler neck. No leaks in system how can I be creating bubbles or is a little bit normal?

Mine had some small bubbles that quickly went away after switching the return lines to look like the picture. Before I switched the return lines, with the the cap off the reservoir, and the engine running, the oil in the reservoir was sloshing all over the place, foamy and frothy. As soon as switched the lines, the oil had barely a ripple and those little bubbles stopped within seconds. Mine has been working great since.

It is turbulence in the fluid returning to the reservoir. I have seen people modify your type of reservoir by extending the filler point with a hose. That would be my next move if I was you.

Good luck

Why should I have to change anything? These parts came stock from Ford and our design to work that way right?

I agree, so not sure what to check next? I can only say what fixed mine.
It's hard to tell from your picture, but it almost looks like the pressure hose from the Hydro-Boost to the steering box and the return hose from the Hydro-Boost to the reservoir are swapped? If that was the case though, I'd think your steering and/ or brakes wouldn't be working?
Just trying to throw ideas out there for you.

Was the pump used? If it was it could have been on its last leg and the bleeding did it in.

What brand fluid? I have read in 4x4 forums where fluid was a problem and changing brands fixed the problem.

Not hydroboost but a friend put lucas power steer saver in car that had a pump that was screaming. It fixed it for a few years until the pump went out.

This pump is a brand new rebuild I just got from Napa. The pump that came out of it was in the Donor truck but I don’t believe it made noise either before the swap. But the donor truck did not have hydroboost. Could it be a problem with the pulley? The truck I got the Hydro boost out of had serpentine belt system. Mine has vbelt. My point being I wonder if the other pulley was A different diameter? My Hydro boost is mounted upside down that’s why the hoses look swapped. But they match the picture also

My Hydro-Boost is upside down too.
I wish I had more ideas for you, but since you were able to do a 7.3 swap into your truck, I'm sure your mechanical abilities are probably equal to, or better than mine. You will get it figured out eventually, and please let us know what fixed the problem for you.
