Do you happen to know what the difference between the tailgates on the short and long wheelbase trucks is? This seems like it would be a pain in the *** for Ford at the time to give them a different tailgate.

According to what I read, the lwb flare side box is wider and taller than the swb box from 53-72. After that, all use the taller, wider dimensions.
I have not had my hands on any to verify this so ymmv.
