91 351w + 96 cab?

I'm doing a frame-off F250 restoration for a friend, and he gave me a 96 cab and a 91 5.8L and frame. The 5.8L has overheated in the past, so I'm going to get a crate since I'd rather spend a little more for a guarantee than rebuild it. I'm intending to get a 96 wiring harness and computer from the junkyard to match the plug of the 96 cab, plus any other parts that I need to swap out to be compatible with the wiring. If I get a longblock 5.8L from Rock Auto, will a 91 work with 96 parts? If not, are they going to nail me if I send in my 91 as core for a 96 longblock?

Thanks.

You want a '96 motor, there are component differences between '91 and '96 that will create challenges with connecting the engine. Also make sure you get the wiring and PCM from an F250/350 and not an F150 or Bronco as those trucks used a totally different system.

Thanks, that's good info. Do you know which of the parts I'll need to switch to 96, for compatibility with the wiring and the motor? And I still have a manual 91 transmission.

The trans wont be a problem, the flywheel and clutch will transfer over.
Do you have a complete EFI motor right now or are there parts missing? If you have it all those external parts will bolt right on the newer spec long block because externally it is the same, the upper and lower intake and all parts attached are good, the accessory brackets are good and the distributor would transplant but there are a couple compatibility issues with it and the newer truck and wiring so you might consider buying a new one for a '96 motor.

From '94 on these motors were factory equipped with a pretty good roller cam while the earlier version had a flat tappet, given that modern oils no longer have zinc additives to lubricate cam lobes it's better to avoid the problem if you have the option.

Yes, I'm starting with a complete motor. A distributor was already on my shopping list of things to replace, so looks like I'm good. I'll just make sure all my replacement parts are 96 instead of 91.

Do you have any advice on purchasing a '96 long block? With the more expensive motor, and with it looking like I won't be able to get a core refund, it's looking like it'll be hundreds of dollars more expensive.

They are a bit more expensive, partly because everybody wants one. I managed to get one with 32k miles out of a truck I bought and parted out. If you have more time than money, that's the cheapest way to get one.

Just backing up a couple steps, would it be possible for me to pull the plug and computer out of the 91 cab and seat them in the 96 cab, splicing in the cab's electronics?

If it floats your boat, yes. Although you will be spending some hours studying wiring diagrams and with a soldering iron.
