Trailer Wheels

So I got a small trailer from the father in law for free. Put a little money into it and now it's looking great! But I'm looking at new wheels and tires. Problem I'm having, the tires are labeled 4.80/4.00-8. Which, correct me if I'm wrong, means it's an 8" wheel. But the wheels from rim to rim measure 9". Can anyone help me out here? Am I measuring wrong? Lol
Just want to pick up the right size before spend $100 on a set.

Seems like if you just match what is already on there you should be fine. Is there a reason not to do that?

I assume that if you are seeing 9" across an 8" wheel that you are measuring from the outer rim to the opposite outer rim edge? That method will always be more than the actual wheel size, wheels are measured from tire bead seat surface, which is a little below the outer rim edge.

Ok. That makes more sense. Because I wouldn't think it would be possible to put an 8" tire on a 9" wheel but! What do I know!? That's why I came here. Lol. Thanks. I'll be picking up a set tmrw now that I know there's nothing goofy going on there

it’s because you’re measuring the lip to lip section. The bead usually sits behind that lip and the bead mounting section is lower.the lip just keeps the tire from popping off the bead.. If you measure where the lip starts bending down you’ll see a 8 inch measurement. It’s the same when people measure a width of a whole. Outside to outside usually is a inch wider than true size. So a 15x7 will measure 15x8 if measured outside to outside of the bead rather than inside to inside of the bead
