Ive got a set of 04 F250 Harley Davidson wheels I plan on running when I get my new axles under the truck and am wanting to get them polished up nice and pretty. Ive been trying to strip the clear coat off the wheels and so far have had terrible results. Ive used 3 different types of strippers, one is aircraft stripper and all 3 only do just a little bit to remove the clear. Is there something else out there that works good or do I just have to do about 10 applications to get all the old clear off? Last time I used stripper I remember it bubbling up the paint and everything else within minutes and so far only the last product i tried even started to bubble and it wasn’t much. Please point me in the right direction to get all the old stuff removed so i can start sanding and polishing.
i removed the yellowing OEM clear coat on my ford SD factory wheels by taking them to a metal striping place. first place did one as an experiment and clear cam off nice but also dulled the factory polished wheel. i called a second place and they said could strip without damaging the finish. sure enough they did it.
pst was unde $50/ wheel. so i ended up repolishing one and hand polishing the other three. never re cleared, just hand polish every couple months.
that is how i would do it again, not re clear, haven't had luck getting any to hold up well and instantly reduces shine by about 30% (clear may not be clear?)
Might look into a local place that can strip them. I figured I wouldn’t reclear them but have been looking into different products that claim to seal them for a while. I had to polish semi truck wheels and tanks at my last job so kinda used to it but it sucks to maintain a lot of shiny wheels
