351 year help?

Bought a “400” based on VIN that was locked up. A year later, I finally get it apart and it strokes a solid 3.5”. Which sucks, because I have a functioning 351 in my Bronco.

Can anyone identify the year/years this engine may be from? The power steering pump and oil dipstick location are the two most obvious differences. My 80 has the dipstick facing the grille on the driver’s side, and my pump is a C2.

Ultimately trying to determine if this has any rebuild value or if it’s headed to someone else’s garage. I know some blocks had cracking issues, but I can’t find a number on this block. #8 cylinder had standing water in it but no obvious leak path from jackets on block surface.

A bit of a slog, this will tell you more than you want to know about the 400/351M.

M-Block 351M/400 Parts Reference

Short version regarding cracks: You need to find the casting code and date code. The crack prone blocks were from Michigan Casting prior to March 2,1977.

Thanks.

I reviewed Bubbas again and realized I just didn’t clean the area where the casting code is. Pic below:

The only additional digits I can find are the GKGG6273. I had read where this could be a partial VIN, but I couldn’t make any sense of it for any of the years in question based on a VIN decoder .pdf I found. I may just fully break it down for kicks and see what the crank says. At least I know the block should be decent as it appears to be from the Cleveland foundry.

Just to close the loop, the date and casting code is tucked up by the starter on Cleveland-casted blocks. Really have to remove the starter to see it.

All this information was on Bubbas site, I just failed to read for comprehension.

On two bosses just above the starter.
