hi guys,
i im in the progress of setting the ignition on my 360fe. The engine ran and still runs good, i found out that the vacuum advance membrane was leasing so i put in a new one, didnt set timing or vacuum advance, only initial timing at around 10 11ish.
Then i saw a little round thing on top of the coil with a cut off wire on till the edge, Found out it was the condesor.
I Believe this is called the duraspark ignition.
do i need to replace this and if so where can i order something like this?
And what is that loose red wire for on the coil?
It looks similar to an ignition condenser, but its purpose is to suppress ignition noise that causes RFI. They were connected to the plus + side of the coil. Sometimes seen at generator/alternator armature and voltage regulators. Somebody probably had a CB and was trying to prevent noise. Shouldn't need it. Unless you got yer ears on!
Yup, agree with Tedster9. That the RFI capacitor. Filters out (supposedly, anyway) radio interference. Earlier versions were connected at the voltage regulator, later ones like yours were connected to the ignition coil.
The Duraspark ignition system itself doesn't need a condenser for the system to function.
