Dealing with rust spots for paint

I'm getting the truck ready for paint. It now has a two tone, grabber blue/ white paint job of acrylic enamel. I have some surface rust where I had a magnetic sign. I'm good with body work and paint. Normally I would grind the spots out and maybe clean out the rust with a rotary file after grinding, and then spray a good primer over it. But I'm wondering if there is a better way. Or a better sealing primer for rust. I was going to use a Summet 2 part urethane primer, high build. Would it be better to cover the spots with an epoxy primer, por15, or something like that?

If you can't sand it all out I'd sandblast it. one of the little cheap ones at Harbor freight has worked great for years for me.

If you clean it up real good and put a epoxy primer over it it will probably hold for years. but if you sandblast it you can forget it for sure.

Corroseal and Rust Bullet...(I would only use Rust Bullet on the frame and under the body)

How deep is the rust? Light surface rust I'd just hit with a grinder, then epoxy prime. If there's deep pock marks, I'd be looking at wire brushing it, then a chemical rust neutralizer. Or sandblasting. A small amount of flash rust under primer isn't really an issue, but any deep rust has the chance of creeping out again.

I have a few spots on the truck that are small, yet have deep pock marks of rust. I also have an area on either side of the cab where the vertical section of the rusty rain gutters were removed, welded up, and bondoed. Bits of rust are showing through. I believe I'll be using a product called Rust-Mort, and then an epoxy primer over that.

Can epoxy primer be sanded and sprayed over with paint? I guess the answer would have to be yes.

I use navel jelly to get the rust out of the “pits”. Self etching epoxy primer is the way to go. It seals the “bondo”” from moisture. Regular primer will allow moisture to get through. You can put body filler on top of the self etching epoxy primer. I only mention the moisture part as people seem to think if you prime it you can treat it like paint till you are ready to put down a color. You know go mudding then wash etc. Wrong you will end up with bubbles do to the body filler wicking in the moisture. Take it for what it’s worth.
