Hey Guys, I've got a 2007 Ford F550 with the 6.0 engine. Was driving it yesterday and the TOW HAUL light came on and started flashing. Haven't had any problems with the trans and the 6.0 is running great now. The code that came up on it on a MATCO MD60 scanner was PO741, "Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid Circuit Performance or Stuck Off" Have any of you had this code come up and what did it take to get the tranny straighten out? I was told by one mechanic that there is a torque converter solenoid in the valve body that may just need replacing and that with a new filter and service to the tranny might take care of it. Anyone has this problem that was that easy to fix? Thanks guys.
It could be the solenoid or it could be the wiring to the solenoid. A bit of diagnostics on the wiring and the solenoid will show which one is the problem.
Thanks Mark, I've been looking on line for a diagram of the valve body to figure out which solenoid it would be. Do you have a link for a diagram that would show that?
Much appreciated Mark, so I need to locate a TTC solenoid in case that is the problem, right? That would be the solenoid that id bad would be causing the problem? And the wiring running to that solenoid is where the problem would be if in the wiring, right? How many ohms should it show going to the solenoid? Basically start at the solenoid and work my way back if it isn't receiving the correct amount to the solenoid? Haven't fooled with transmission that much, a little (that's putting it lightly) over my head. I appreciate you taking the time to send this me. Thanks
Electrically check the wiring from the PCM to the transmission connector. If it doesn't show a problem with continuity or short to ground, then check the resistance of the solenoid.
Thanks again Mark. I moved the truck from where it was this morning to the shop, about 7-8 miles and the TOW HAUL light did not come on but it did a weird thing a couple times when I would start to stop at a traffic light. As I put the brake on it seemed like the transmission went into something like super low. I could tell I would have had to stand on the brake to stop it and that if I did it was going to keep on pulling until it stalled the engine, so I bump it up in neutral and the engine idle right back to the 7-800 rpm's where it normally does. When the light changed and I put it in gear it pulled away without any problem, hesitated a little but picked up and ran and shifted without any problem. Did that twice. Ring any bells? Thanks again for all your help and suggestions. I appreciate it.
That is what will happen if the torque converter clutch is applying when you're at a stop. When this happens you should get a P0741 code set. This is all the same problem.
Gotcha, thanks Mark, didn't know if that my be an indication of another problem or more serious. I appreciate it. I'm going to see if I can find the solenoid Monday and then get into it on Tue. I'll let you know what we find.
Hey Mark, I'm going to go ahead and get a solenoid before we take this thing apart. Putting together a list of what I will need once I drop the pan and the valve body. Other the the pan gasket, filter, filter plate gasket and solenoid, is there a gasket that goes on the other side of the valve body or is there something else I'm not seeing?
You don't need a pan gasket. The one that is there is reusable many, many times. There is no filter plate gasket. You can change the filter if you want to, but there is no reason to change it. You don't need to remove the solenoid body to change the solenoid.
If I were changing the solenoid I would only have a solenoid and new MERCON LV or SP fluid.
Thanks Mark, That will definitely help out on the cost of this stuff. One more question if you're still around. If we check continuity between the PCM and the solenoid and we're not getting it is that a lead or harness that can be replaced alone or is it a part of a bigger harness? I'll let you know how it goes.
