I have an 86 f-250 diesel with 157k. I noticed that every now and again my gauge says my oil is a little below normal. So i put in a quart or so and it seems to fix the problem. I was wondering if this was normal. I have heard diesels take more oil than a gas, so i know that putting a quart in this isn't as serious as putting it in a gas. There is no blue smoke, nor is there any serious oil leaks. I was wondering if this was normal, or is it burnin up oil or what the case may be?
The stock electric gauge can read whatever it feels like. Is it actually low when it does this? There is a problem that I've run into on trucks that have been hit in the front end at one point. The oil pick up tube will actually drop and break off the oil pump. Sounds like yours is probably just the gauge acting up though.
Never trust a factory gauge espcially ford gauges. Save your self alot of greif and put in some good quality aftermarket gauges and change the senders while your at it. Little bit of money now saves you alot of money later. This is what I have learned working on farm equipment all my life.Dirt and vibration kill gauges and for whatever reason ford gauges seem to be affected more then others.
I am confidant that you are using the dipstick to determine if the engine needs oil or not. I dont know of any type of "guage" that tells you the engine needs oil.
redneckmechnic- I see that you have 4' stacks on your truck. Are you running straigt out of the manifolds, through an mufflers? Also how do they sound. Lastly did it increase performance any?
The crossover pipe was ditched for a custom 4 inch pipe with one pipe leading back behind the cab. It then goes up and "y"s of for the two stacks wich are inbetween the cab and flatbed. There is no muffler of any sort on the truck. It sounds pretty nice not to loud unless you really stand on it. It seemed to give the truck a little bit more hp. Notheing earth shattering but you can feel it.
I love the five speed in it. The main reason i swapped it in was casue my engine was tacking to high. going into overdrive/5th gear drops the rpms by roughly 700-800 rpm. Ya have to watch tho the zfs used a couple different gear ratios for there overdrives. The only hard part about putting it in was getting a clucth that would work with my orginal flywheel. I bought my tranny used out of a truck that had a 6.9 i think someone swapped the input shaft for a smaller one but iam not 100% sure about that. Ive never had a lick of trouble with the unit itself although I complety rebuilt it when i got it I also made it into a 4x4 tranny since it came out of a 2x4 truck. It was deffintaly a good investment.
