I'm keeping an eye out in the local salvage yards for some axles with 4.30 gears. Mine is an 01. Will any year axles out of the excursions swap In? What about the 99-04 pickups?
Did the excursions ever come with the goofy rear axle that had one caliper in the front like the trucks did? I found a set of axles out of an 2000 not too far from me but I just went through the entire brake system on my current axle and want to reuse it all.
Yes, first years EXs (or at least some of them) had the rear brakes that way. I think if you have both styles on hand swapping the parts around is doable.
UPDATE: Info in post #8 says that they are NOT interchangeable.

I am not familiar with that brake setup but I think that the Ex rear axle is the same as the same year truck axle with the exception of the 05 which is the same as the 04 truck.

Yeah, some did. I have a very early 2000 Excursion (most of the parts were manufactured mid-1999) and my driver-side rear caliper is in front of the axle with a large rock guard in front of it.
Just FYI the flange is different on the early and late axles so you can't swap the one caliper in front setup to the later style!
Thanks for the education, I thought they were interchangeable, but had no first hand experience with those early axles. I updated my earlier post with your info.
