So today I decided to swap the gears/center section/third member out of an old 78 9" rear end into my 1980 but when I got ready to hook it all back up i find out that the universal/yoke size is not common between the two. Seems the outside dimensions of the 78' u joint is shorter than the 80' by about 3/8 to 1/2 ". I know they make a u joint to hook it up because the last time I done something similar the guy at the parts store knew exactly what part I needed. Anyone point me in the right direction of the joint I need would be great, thanks
What you need to do is find a good old auto parts store that can look up the information you are after.
You may also be able to find this on line.
Look up the joint for your 78 and get the size = dia of the caps, distance across caps and if inside or out side retainers.
Then need to do the same for your 80.
With that information you need to find a joint that has half of the 78 and the other half for the 80.
I had to use that type of joint on my 70 AMC Javelin when I installed a Mustang WC T5 5sp in place of the T10 4sp transmission.

If you look hard enough, Spicer does have a chart online for those adapter type u-joints. And Napa is a good place to get them.
When I did my T5 swap it was NAPA that had the chart they printed out for me.
I took it home so I could measure everything to get the part number from the chart and got the right joint.
