93 Lightning rear end question

Hello first gen Lightning fans. I have got a posi 4-10 gear rear end from a 93 Lightning to install in my 86. I was wondering if they’re anything I need to know about on these rear ends.

Broken friction plates; evidence can be found at the bottom of the carrier. These units can be rebuilt in your garage/shop and there several vendors/dealers that offer replacement parts.

When you refill it with gear oil, don't forget to add friction modifier to it.

Thanks for the info. Maybe I can get several miles out of it no more than it’s driven(sunny dry days) and I’m passed the jerking one around stage. Any recommendations on what brand and how much friction modifier to get.

Most any standard 80w 90 gear oil is fine; Valvoline, Royal Purple, etc... Synthetic types are not recommended for clutch type lockers. Ford sells 4oz bottles of friction modifier, and one of those is good for one gear oil change.

Both tags are still on the rear end. One identifies the gear and the other one says to use only 75/140 full synthetic. I bought a 4 ounce bottle of Lube Gard limited slip supplement to go in it also.

That Lubegard will work fine.

I'd run whatever the tag shows then. I may be remembering the recommendation that came with my aftermarket LSD many many years ago.

EDIT AND MODERATOR NOTE: Spammer quote from above removed. ///85e150

Mine has been doing good since I installed it. Spring pads and u-bolts from the 8.8 worked on the 4:10 no problem. The wheel cylinders brake shoes and brake springs all worked from the 8.8 but the 8.8 drums will not work. The center hole is to small in the 8.8 drums. The shocks worked from the lightning as well and is a little beefier for a better ride. I had to buy a round drive shaft flange to bolt the driveshaft to the rear end and it has messed with my speedometer also. It says I’m going 10mph faster than what I really am.
