Thanks for your response Matt. I’ve been offered one but didn’t know what all troubles I would run into trying to install it and how many $$$ it’d cost buying stuff for the installation.
The lightning rear end has the round flange to bolt the drive shaft to. My 86 still has the original yolk so should I take the old yolk off the 86 rear end and put it on the lightning rear end or simply change the flange on the drive shaft to match the lightning flange.

Well you can do either. But I would add the flange to the drive shaft. Then you do not have to mess with bearing preloads for the pinion.
Sounds good to me. I’m all for the easier way when there is one. Is there a certain size of flange I need to look for?
You will have to take some measurements, but flange yokes are available. (Below is just an example and not the correct one) Summit has a good selection actually.
I finally got the time and help to do the swap. Thanks for all your info Matt! All I had to do different was to get the yolk flange to put on the driveshaft to hook up to the Lightning rear differential. Everything else swapped in and out with no problems. I had just rebuilt everything inside both brake drums on the 86 and all that was an exact fit for the Lightning except for the drums themselves. The center hole on the 86 drums was smaller than the Lightning’s.

Glad to hear it all went well for you. And thanks for following up as may help someone else down the road.
