My truck is acting like it is losing power; but from the exhaust system not the motor, if that makes any sense. I do have an aftermarket exhaust (flowmaster 40 cat-back). The exhaust makes like a poping sound without the poping and it feels like the backpressure, or lack there of, causes the motor to lose power.
Now it would seem like it is something to do with the polution sensors, just not sure which one. Someone mentioned the EGR valve. Could be, costs $100 so I would like to see if that would be the general opinion. Then I need to figure out where it is so I can replace it. I have not seen a Chilton's book for my truck yet.
One other thing, I do not drive it alot only on weekends. So it does sit a lot. When it seems to be driven for a long time, 2+ days, the problem appears to go away.
I don't believe a 2001 even has a EGR valve, only thought 99's had them. I have a 2000 and no EGR valve. I could be wrong maybe someone else will jump in. If you truck sits for long period near a lake, ocean etc, you may have moisture ( condensation ) building up inside your exhaust system. Does it vent a white smoke when up to operating temp after sitting for a long period. This may explain why it runs OK after several days. Also check and see if you feel an abnormal amount of heat build up under the hood. Mine did this when the cat was clogged.
Good luck ..let us know how things come out.
ON EDIT: Disregard comment on EGR Valves. I had V-10's on my mind, not 5.4's. Sorry........
Accordign to fordpartonline.com I can get one for $100. So they think I do; not that I do not beleive you. I am thinking about the CAT as well. Not sure how to fix it if it is that.. Those are more than $100.
If you bought your truck in MA it has an EGR. MA and some other states sell trucks that meet CA emissions.
If you really think that the EGR is the culprit then take it to your dealer. Emission stuff has a much longer warranty than your standard warranty. Bottom line is that your emission stuff is still under warranty.
However, if the problem really is your EGR it would have thrown the Check Engine light.
When was the last time you changed your fuel filter? If you haven't, change it first.
Also have the truck scanned to see if all things are working properly. Run a capture mode on the truck with the scanner .It will tell you alot of things
proper fuel mixtures ,02 sensors,etc...
In other words, they can be mounted RIGHT, or BACKWARDS; They all come with a sticker the says something like
FLOW DIRECTION -------->
and need to be put on that way.
Have you checked that?? They are flow checked and calibrated for the directional baffles inside of them. Flowing in reverse, the pressure drop is much higher from a gas dynamics standpoint.
See if you can still locate the sticker, if it hasn't burned off, or was removed by the installer.
When mine was installed, they were on there way to mounting it backwards, when i asked "what's that sticker for?"
Most Flowmasters have an "Flow---->" or "inlet" emobossed into the metal on them. And and most applications....the inlet is usually a 1/2 inch bigger but not always!!! But generally even on same size inlet outlet the inlet has a wider flange.
Have a nice day!!
Very interesting. But the truck ran fine for a month or so after the exhaust was put in (detail did not mention sorry). I did drive it one weekend for the whole weekend and by later Sunday it was running just fine. So it seems to be that after running it awhile it clears up whatever the problem is. (I will check the muffler direction tomorrow morning though, just in case)
